As a follow up sir:

For iOS mobile apps, what are your thoughts on configuring Evernote iOS to download notes and notebooks locally? Does that improve performance at all or not? I’ve tried it both ways and can’t really seem to tell much difference.

Hello, John! I hope you are well. I have enjoyed your blog for quite some time. I hope I'm not too late for your Evernote AMA, but either way, I've been meaning to reach out to you for quite some time.

I have been using Evernote for around 20 years and have been a paid subscriber for about half that long. Evernote has truly become my digital brain! I've got a LOT of stuff in there.....

My questions to you:

What can be done to improve EverNote performance, both on Windows PC & iOS / Mobile?

My EverNote database is around 12-14 GB, and I have been unhappy with the apps' performance for quite some time.

Few thoughts / questions. with the goal in mind of improving performance:

1. Is it advisable to empty the trash / permanently delete notes in the trash?

2. You seem to mention "archiving" a lot; if you archive / export a folder out of EverNote, that simply makes a copy / backup of it, correct? You must then manually & specifically delete / purge / remove the folder from EverNote, correct?

3. If I simply go through my EverNote, delete old / unused notes (that jar of screws...!); they go to the trash; should I also permanently delete them from the trash?

Would love to hear any other thoughts or ideas you have.

Thanks for your time & hope to hear from you!

Hi Jon, I was wondering if the Evernote Experts Community have had any discussions with Evernote concerning the state of their quality assurance. As much as I like many of the new additions, it seems they break more things than they fix and do little to no quality testing prior to releasing new versions. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is tired of being a beta tester. They really need to have an opt-in beta program instead of using their user base. Thanks for listening.

Jon, I’m finding your “Questions” series informative, and hope it will continue, because I have much to learn! My biggest question may fall outside the purview of what you’re doing, but it’s by far my biggest Evernote question: I’m a happy Evernote user, and continue to find more and better ways to use the product, but I can’t help but be demoralized by the constant drum beat of gloom and doom prophecies. I’d like to ignore them and get on with my work, but it’s hard to concentrate sometimes when my mind turns to thoughts of how I’d respond if I woke up one morning and Evernote had simply vanished. I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels that way. You have a great deal of credibility in the user community (likely more than the people from “Spoons”).If you could address the issue head-on it would be a terrific morale booster.

Thanks Mark. Got lots of questions on the list and I'll add that one as well :)

Hey Jon, it seems to me that when clipping EN used to attempt to decide which folder the clipped note belonged, and most times got it right. Now it defaults to the In Box, requiring a second activity to relocate it to the correct in box. Is there a chance I de-selected a default to direct it to the correct folder?

Pretty much the only thing I currently dislike about Evernote is the lack of nested folders and the fact that you can only organize notes down to 3 levels (i.e, Stack>Notebooks>Notes). Would be great if you could at least go down an additional level (i.e, 4 levels) rather than via Tags.

What is your view on nested folders? .... and do you think Bending Spoons will ever introduce this feature now they are the owners?
