We’re a couple of weeks into 2024 so I thought I’d try and put together some sort of roadmap of what we could be seeing from Evernote over the next few months.
Evernote don’t publish a roadmap so what I’ve done is go through old official blog posts, forum posts and try to create a list of what’s been mentioned in the past that we haven’t seen yet.
Plus, lots of speculation. I enjoy making up ideas for new features!
New UI
Evernote have already spoken about a new user interface coming along in January.
I’ve been using it for a few weeks and its very pretty. All the buttons are in the same place, muscle memory is intact, but the new look and feel does improve the app a lot.
Hopefully not long to wait.
RENT Update
This is a big effort that’s going on to further improve sync speeds and reliability of all the apps.
It focuses on meta-data like note titles, thumbnails, dates, and note list content. Once implemented sync will look and feel a lot quicker.
New database for the client apps
This is something that was mentioned a couple weeks ago which looks like it will modernise and speed up the apps.
The web version of Evernote got a new database structure a few months ago, now its time for the installed clients.
Better task syncing
Regular readers will know about my love/hate relationship with tasks. I use them but I wish they were a little better.
We’ve been promised better tasks and I know this work is continuing so I’m looking forward to something soon.
Continued work on the ‘Monolith’
We first heard about “The Monolith” back in August and from what I can tell it’s a big Java programme that basically runs Evernote.
If one teeny thing had to be changed or updated, you had to recompile the whole Monolith which slowed down development.
This continues to be rewritten and different features and functionality are being turned into smaller microservices which are easier to work with.
I’m pretty sure as this work continues, we’ll see a better performing and reliable Evernote.
Outlook Calendar Sync
It’s been a while coming but from what I know it’s still going to happen! I would imagine the rewrite of the Monolith has delayed it. I know lots of folk who want this.
Advanced Code Blocks
Syntax highlighting is something I’m looking forward to and it will hopefully be coming soon.
I use Evernote code blocks quite a bit as I write a lot of JavaScript for work and store snippets in Evernote. It will be great to have code functions and variables highlighted just like in a code editor.
AI Cleanup Tool Updates
One thing I can share are some updates hopefully coming to the Ai Cleanup tool.
In the future we’ll be able to use Ai Cleanup to summarize, translate, fix grammar or even change the tone of your note.
I don’t use cleanup a lot as my notes are pretty neat and tidy, but I can see huge opportunities with the feature.
What I’d like to see. Lots of speculation!
Better sharing system
Please! I’d love to see a system similar to how Google Drive or OneDrive works where you can share notes or notebooks, just to one person or everyone and have them password protected.
The training work I do involves creating manuals for my clients and I’d love to do this is Evernote and privately share without them having to sign up to Evernote to view them.
Notification bell for all notifications
I’d love to see a notification tray, maybe hidden behind a bell icon that stores all notifications from Evernote, with a mark as read button.
This would contain all note and task reminders. We could also be informed if a note gets emailed in, a note added via a third party or the web clipper.
Just a place that you can go to, so you don’t miss the pop-up notifications.
Better task sorting and maybe saved task searches
I’d love to be able to sort tasks how I want and create searches or views just for tasks, a little like how we can for notes.
Maybe we could have to chance to add tags to tasks and then sort by a tag or keyword, then save this view or search.
I’d also love to see this bought to the home screen widgets so I can create task widgets for certain projects.
Multiple home screens
I’d love to be able to create new home screen dashboards and populate them with different widgets.
I could then create a Work Home, Personal Home and maybe even a separate home screen for different projects.
Image recognition
Maybe in the future we could search for a “cup” and all the notes that include an image of a cup show up as well as text.
Image cleanup
This would be great built into the Ai Cleanup tool.
Bending Spoons, the owners of Evernote already have a pretty top-class photo editing app. Could some of its features be bought into Evernote?
Audio transcribing
I’d love this bought into the Ai Cleanup tool as well so we could select an audio clip, or even a video clip and have it transcribed.
Handwriting to text conversion
Something else that could go under the Ai Cleanup tool.
Scan in handwritten text or write on your screen and have Evernote turn it into text.
I could go on and on with ideas but I’m going to stop. Almost at 1000 words!
What would you like to see arrive in 2024?
Have a great weeked
All the best
Jon
change font color hotkey, please,
wait a few second when writing notes and try to highlight my key thought in the paragraph,.
and this few second click would go up to 50-60 times in a hrs meeting / class...
some notebook app could do Ctrl + shift + H to change text, can evernote do similar stuff,?
thank you
Something very simple.
1) There are many fields and scroll down lists that does not include a memmory of Last field Value or Last selected record. It means that you need to reselect or write entry when you are repeating a task.
For example, when you want to move notes from a notebook to another.
2) As you said, yes, storing Searches in a search list is a must.
3) Another one, Evernote for Google Gmail complement by Evernote Corp. is too simple and searching for a notebook is only sorted alphabetically and not by pile. This in annoying because I have more than 250 notebooks sorted alphabetically. Should be sorted by pile and functionaly similar to web clipper which is very nice!!!
