We're on a four-day holiday weekend here in the UK so this week is a quick one so I can get back to eating ridiculous amounts of overpriced chocolate!
A little security improvement happened at the end of last month and kind of went under the radar but is worthy of a mention.
Evernote got together with the Have I Been Pwned website to check if login details had been exposed in data breaches of other apps.
This is what Have I Been Pwned does:
Data breaches are rampant and many people don't appreciate the scale or frequency with which they occur. By aggregating the data here I hope that it not only helps victims learn of compromises of their accounts, but also highlights the severity of the risks of online attacks on today's internet.
A lot of folk use the same email and password for multiple online services, so if one gets hacked, data on another website could be at risk.
This is what Evernote said on Twitter a few weeks ago.
What this means is if you use your Evernote login password for, lets say, an online store that got hacked, Evernote will reset the password if it appears in a public breach.
There was also a very nice gesture from Evernote to donate $10,000 to the project which will help others in the future.
So, if Evernote thinks you're login password has been compromised they will automatically ask you to reset your password at the next login.
This means it’s really important to keep your email address up to date. If it changes, you leave a job or school, then make sure you know which services use it and get things changed.
For the best login security, pick a long password that can't be remembered and setup Two Factor Authorisation.
New Slash Command Live
Included in version 10.82.2, which is available now on the Evernote download page, comes a new slash command called "New linked note".
What this does is create a new note in the notebook you are in and link it to the original note.
If you use Evernote for research or spend a lot of time creating notes in specific notebooks this will be really useful. Folks have asked for this for years!
Let me know what you think in the comments.
Have a great weekend,
All the best
Jon
Thanks for your latest email. The security improvement is positive, as is the new slash command. I'm enjoying reading your balanced updates about Evernote, as the hysterical negativity from some quarters seems overblown.
Good to find out about creating a new linked note from the keyboard. Just the kind of stuff I read you for.
