New Evernote features! A new way to link notes, pin notes to notebook & mobile customisation
Newsletter housekeeping: The latest version for PC & Mac should be 10.92.3 and you can grab it on the Evernote download page. Current mobile version should be 10.92.1. In-app updates can take a few days to arrive.
Last week we saw the addition of code blocks and quote blocks and this week we get even more new shiny things, including quite possibly the most useful feature Evernote has ever launched!
Make sure you're on the latest version to get these new features. If you don't see them straight away, hang on a few days as they could be rolling out in stages.
Pin notes to a notebook
I've been using this feature for the last couple of weeks and just before it was released, they took it away from the test version! I really missed it, I mean really noticed it had gone.
This is a huge new feature.
You can pin one or more notes to the top of a notebook.
Notice in the screen grab above there's a little pin icon to the left of the image, this means the note will always stay at the top of the notebook.
I can pin more than one note so whenever I visit this notebook the pinned notes are always at the top.
Here's two notes pinned in slide list view.
This has been so useful.
The feature has really helped my Evernote CRM work a lot better. I have a stack for 'Clients' and in the stack there's a notebook for each client. I now have my client contact note and the active projects I'm working on for that client pinned to the top. When I finish a project I un-pin. Simple.
On the personal side I have my 'Vinyl Wants' note pinned to the top of my music collection notebook and my in my backpacking notebook I have the current trip I'm working on pinned to the top.
Pinned notes will work in all notebooks but not stacks, that's under consideration, would you want that?
Pinned notes don't show in the ‘All Notes’ view. If you had 2 notes pinned in 50 notebooks then the first 100 notes in the ‘All Notes’ view would be pinned making the view useless. Maybe a filter option?
Will you be using pinned notes in notebooks? Let me know in the comments.
A new way to link notes
Evernote now has an '@' command that works in a similar way to the ‘/’ command and will let you very quickly add a link to a note.
Type the '@' symbol and then start typing the name of a note and it will show in a little pop up. To select the note you want, you can use up/down keys and then hit enter.
You can edit the link, change it to display in either Title or Preview mode and unlink it if you want.
This gives you the chance to link to any other note very quickly which is going to be useful for a lot of folk.
Will you be using this new way of linking notes? Leave me a comment.
New mobile Navigation setting
In the latest version of the mobile app, you're going to see a new option in the settings called 'Navigation'.
This gives you the chance to choose your default landing page when you open the app.
Choices right now are:
Create (Home) page
Notes view
Notebook view
Tasks
Calendar
Evernote are thinking about adding Shortcuts as an option in a future release. If you use shortcuts a lot then using the Notes View will save you a tap right now.
The new mobile home screen has been a success, more folk are creating more notes and tasks and engaging with the app a lot more but there are a significant number of folk who want a little more customisation, I'm one of them.
I like the idea of the landing page being fluid, changing it depending on what I'm doing.
If I'm having a normal work day then I would probably have my default page set to Tasks.
If I'm out travelling for a few days then I would change the landing page to notes so I can get to my shortcuts quicker and see travel information. I would switch this to Shortcuts if they make it available.
What will your default screen be?
That's about it. Don't forget to let me know what you think of these new features and how they could be improved on. Leave me a comment.
Have a great weekend
All the best
Jon
This is actually awesome. Two great upgrades!
The '@' links were, for me managing lots of interlinked research, Notion's one main advantage over Evernote. Now Evernote wins everywhere....
Love the way I now can pin notes to my Home page. Also to Notebooks.
