re: draggable sections, the implementation of this still feels a little off to me. If the toggle is open, and you're dragging by the header, why wouldn't the default drag action be to move the entire block of text? I can't think of a scenario where I would want the header to move but not the text beneath it.

I think it was to provide a choice for moving everything if needed. I've moved just headers around myself a few times, I suppose I could've just moved the text but the header seemed easier. Kind of best of both worlds but I understand what you mean as I thought the same as you when I first saw it.

The drag handles are making it so much easier than before to rearrange and structure notes (never really got the hang of how to select and ”grab” selected text before the handles.

I just wish there was a way to select multiple blocks by ”dragging to select” (à la Notion).

That's a good idea. I'll pass it on.

Hi Jon, can you also put in a request to move these text blocks via keyboard shortcuts!

Starting to get my head around using Spaces in EN.

I've been using the PARA (Projects Areas, Resources, Archives) metho to organise my "stuff". For each of those headings, I've had a Stack in EN for each of those major headings, with relevant notebooks in each Stack. However, I found that the Areas Stack wasn't working for me.

The notebooks in the Area Stack referred to high-level responsibilities/interests like "Finances", "Hobbies", "Tech", "Family", etc (a max of 10 Areas before they became unwieldy!). But I found the number of notes in each Area Notebook becoming a bit unwieldy and not always easy to track/manage. There seemed to be a lower level of hierarchy for each "Area" - as an example, "Tech" seemed to breakdown into "Windows PC", "Android Phone". "DTP", "Video editing", and more...

So my "Areas" Stack has been replaced with a Space for each Area of interest, so a "Te h Space", a "Finances Space", etc/ and each of these Spaces has/will have appropriate notebooks within it to allow me to organise the various things within each Area more clearly - and help me manage the accumulation of notes better - making it easier to see what can be moved out of the Area to become a Resource, or to be Archived.

All this is a work-in-progress but looking good initially.

Hope that makes sense - feel free to question.

One thing I's like to see in Spaces, is to have the little purple tick indicator denoting an active EN Task appear in the list of Notebooks/Notes within a Space The "Recent Notes section of a Space shows this, but I think it would be useful if the indicator appeared on the list of Notebooks/Notes. And maybe also have the Task indicator on Pinned Notes within the Space?

I'm looking at a Space being a mini–Home page/dashboard.

Hope I haven't rambled on too much.

Do you think you're using them more to organise what you collect rather than run a topic from a space?

I've heard tasks mentioned a lot. Big improvement would be to see all tasks related to the notes within the space. That would be useful for running projects.

You're right - my use of Spaces for my "Areas of Interest" is largely about organising what I collect.

I'm also looking at using Spaces for Projects (like the next issue of a fanzine I'm involved with, or plannung a giliday, or replacing current car)

That's a good idea. I reckon a space would be good for writing a book.

Thanks for your videos and articles Jon. I took some time to play around with the new Spaces features today, and started to get really excited when I saw that the underlying architecture allowed for mirroring of data at more than one location in my database. However, I now see that this is managed at the hierarchy level of Notebooks instead of with standalone, individual notes. Over the years I have minimized my dependency on Evernote folders (Notebooks), so moving a mirrored copy of one of my (large) Notebooks into a Space is, unfortunately for me, not particularly useful.

If you would like to share my thoughts on your next call with the Evernote team, I'd be really interested to know if anyone else has expressed similar feedback... or if I fall into an outlier category... wouldn't be the first time (LOL).

Expand full comment

Yeah. The general feedback I'm seeing is that if you're heavy with tags then spaces are not a lot of use but if you don't use tags much and have lots of notebooks then very useful.

That said I don't use many tags myself and I've only got 2 spaces. These are very useful but my main workflows are still in the sidebar with notebooks and stacks.

Spaces... I'm not sure spaces, as they are, will will work for me. I much prefer having my notes in a notebook. Having a notebook in spaces helps a little, but I tend to have fewer notebooks with lots of notes, so that doesn't really help. I thought spaces was more like having multiple "Home" pages, where I can populate it with notes from many notebooks. I'll keep fiddling with that to see if I can find a practical use for my organization, or lack thereof.

Drag & Drop... Thanks for clarifying the difference with drag and drop of headers when the headers are collapsed vs expanded. I accidentally moved stuff around and sort of got lost in my note. That was driving me crazy. Now just knowing helps.

Paragraphs... Still one thing that drive me crazy. New paragraph when hitting return. It appears to be a app standard to be this way. I always forget to hit <shift><Return>, so my notes are full of one line paragraphs. It wasn't so bad before they added the "drag handle", but now I find it very distracting. My personal preference would be to have <shift><return> create a new paragraph.

Thanks for all you do.

I like the idea of multiple home pages. Maybe they could add widgets and things to the space at some point. Many thanks for your support.

Still on the fence regarding spaces. As it gets more functionality I hope the use case becomes apparent to me.

I do like the drag function. Now that has made a big difference to how I use notes and edit it them. Made some of the process quicker.

Agree. The drag function is a huge benefit especially for moving header sections around.

I've tried it without success, maybe because my space consists of two words: AREA Kunstbiz

Isn't it possible for spaces to consist of 2 words or do they have to be in "..."?

Expand full comment

Should be able to have words for your space name. I have a space called "Taming the Trunk. Do you have a notebook with the same name?

Expand full comment

No, I created the term with "AREA" only for the purpose of spaces. Should the space name with several words be in quotation marks when adding the name in the email subject line?

Expand full comment

Got you... It should work with multiple words but make sure the @space name is at the end of the subject line. Just tested and works here OK.

Expand full comment

Thank you,my subject line is this:

Two Evernote Spaces @AREA Kunstbiz

AREA Kunstbiz

is my space

The forwarded email to Evernote lands in the general note list, but not in this space :-(

Expand full comment

That's odd. Can you try it with a notebook to see if you get the same result.

Expand full comment

You are right 🫤 it doesn't work with notebooks:

@BCH - Technik

is one of my notebooks and this is what I added behind the subject line text in an email.

But the note lands in the standard notebook, not in this one.

One thing that I’m sure has been noted by users already is that you can’t currently delete spaces; however, I believe it’s something they’re working on. I discovered this after I created a Test Space to see how it all works, and now I can’t get rid of it 😆

Expand full comment

Yes. Delete is coming soon. You can hide it from the sidebar which may help a little.
